It is something I have been noticing in reviews by many critics over and over again. Many times the phrase "the characters never rise beyond stereotypes" or something to that effect is used to criticize stereotype characters whether they be the stereotype of a certain race, sexual orientation, culture, etc. For me, that has never been an issue and many times I would watch these films after reading the review and think to myself yes this character is a filmy stereotype, but so what? It is something I genuinely never had a problem with so I am trying to understand why critics have a problem with it. In the case of Ek Main Aur Ekk Tu, several reviews pointed out Rahul's parents being stereotypes as an issue (a minor issue that they tended to say say was salvaged by Ratna Pathak Shah's performance). While watching the film I failed to understand why it was a problem. I am not talking about the bollywood created stereotypes that you have a huge problem with (I don't see the big deal in that either, but I get why you have an issue with that). I am just talking about true stereotypes, the ones that exist because there are enough people who are that way that made it a stereotype to begin with and why critics seem to have an issue with that in films. I guess I could've said this more concisely in 144 characters, but this is just much easier and requires a lot less thought.Kevinnoreply@blogger.com
